T-Mobile pays the executive in charge of leading the Bellevue, Washington-based wireless provider's 5G strategy a $450,000 salary, according to visa filings.
5G, the next-generation wireless technology, is expected to be much faster than the current 4G LTE standard – estimates vary, but it could be between 10 times and 100 times faster. That speed not only means faster connections for home internet and wireless users, but more possibilities in new technologies including internet of things and artificial intelligence.
There's a lot to gain for the wireless carrier that builds out the best 5G network, the fastest, and T-Mobile is trying to win that distinction. T-Mobile in August launched its standalone 5G network in the US, a milestone for the industry at the time. The company on Wednesday said it is launching a venture fund to back 5G technologies and operates a 5G "innovation lab" at its headquarters.
T-Mobile in April completed its merger with Sprint, previously the respective No. 3 and No. 4 largest carriers. T-Mobile in August announced it had surpassed AT&T to become the second-largest carrier by number of subscribers. Combining networks with Sprint likely helped T-Mobile avoid a churn in subscribers amid the pandemic.

Business Insider discovered the salary for the head of 5G strategy in visa filing data. American companies have to disclose salaries when they apply for visas on behalf of current or prospective foreign workers. The Office of Foreign Labor Certification publishes the salaries every year. Business Insider analyzed the data to find the highest-paying roles within T-Mobile.
We analyzed T-Mobile more than 360 active foreign-worker visas in 2020 to find the titles with the highest salaries (the data doesn't include total compensation, which can include bonuses or stock awards). We focused this list on roles that pay more than $160,000, and used job postings to find out more about the positions. Not every job title matches perfectly with an opening, so we used similar job postings where necessary.
It's not a comprehensive look because it contains only salaries for foreign workers, but it provides a rare look at the actual pay practices at T-Mobile — most companies doesn't disclose or discuss employee compensation, except for public companies required to report compensation for top executives.
T-Mobile did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication.

Top salary: T-Mobile lists a title of senior vice president of technology transformation with a $450,000 salary.
T-Mobile hired Ulf Ewaldsson in early 2019 as the company's senior vice president of technology transformation, responsible for running "T-Mobile's 5G technology evolution strategy," according to a press release announcing his hiring at the time.
Ewaldsson in April 2020 became the company's "chief network officer," according to his LinkedIn profile. It doesn't appear anyone else at T-Mobile has assumed the senior vice president of technology transformation role.
